Nifty and Sensex — the benchmark indices of the domestic equity markets — ended the day in red amid weak cues from global markets and weak rupee. The Sensex fell below the 35,000-level to touch a low of 34,811.60 due to heavy selling pressure.The NSE Nifty, after slipping below the 10,500-mark to hit a low of 10,477, finally concluded 29 points, or 0.27 per cent, down at 10,524.
The UCO Bank (up 14%), Jet Airways (up 9%), Tata Steel (up 8%), Infibeam (up 8%) and PC Jeweller (up 7%) were the major gainers on the Sensex today. SBI (up 4%), Axis Bank (up 2%), Wipro (up 2%) and HCL Tech (up 2%) were the major gainers on Nifty.
The rupee depreciated 67 paise, to 73.12 (intra-day) against the dollar too had a negative influence. The domestic currency on Friday had clocked its biggest single-day gain in over five years, surging by 100 paise to close at 72.45 against the US dollar on easing crude oil prices.
Meanwhile, SBI net profit fell to Rs 576.46 crore in Q2, against Rs 1,840.43 crore a year ago. The shares of troubled carrier Jet Airways rose as much as 9.40% to 250.7 rupees, their highest since September 19.
